1986 Pursuit 2550 Re-powered with 2008 Etec 225

Postby Sam22 » Wed Jul 04, 2012 1:34 pm

Hey all!

I am a forum geek so I am glad to have found this one. I just purchased the "sea witch". I do a lot of Salmon fishing in North West Michigan. I live in Traverse City, fish mostly Frankfort and Traverse City. I am a licensed captain and my main source of income for the last 13 years has been parasailing, some fishing too. These days I captain on the side and work another job full time. So far the Pursuit has been a bit of a headache, I may have to have the transom worked already!! But I love Pursuits and this is what I have wanted.

Good luck with the purchase of the 2550, its an awsome boat. I love pursuits we are on our second one. I would be interested if you received your captains license in Michigan. I would like to attain a captains license as well. The salmon fishing has been terrific this year on Lake Michigan.

I agree, the salmon fishing has been great. I was in frankfort the last few days. I beat them up good. Yeah I got my license in Michigan. I took my class down near detroit, but I have a good friend that owns a captains training school based in Traverse City, but he travels and Teaches all over. Do you have enough sea time to get a license you think? You need 365 8 hour days in a 5 year period. In the old days there were really strict about that, and it had to be under a licensed captain, these days you can document time on your own boat. If you were on someone else's boat you have to have them sign off on your time. I would be glad to give you my friend's number, he could talk to you about what you need to do to get started.

Hey Sam22! - The 2550 is a nice boat. I have a 1990 2550 and enjoy the heck out of it in both the Gulf and Atlantic. It's my second Pursuit and not sure I would look anywhere else! I'm interested to see how your Etec holds up.

Hello, I too am the proud owner of a new/used Pursuit 2550 O/B, circa 1988. I got her last week and have had house guests ever since. going to start some maintenance and minor repairs this week. I am a little farther north than you Sam, on LTB. I am just starting to learna bout the boat and exploring some upgrades. Right now I am trying to figure out some options for additional seating. Hope to see you on the water.

LTB? Little Thunder Bay???

Little Traverse Bay?!

I bet it's little traverse bay....

I would be curious to see pictures of your rig. I have been searching for a pursuit like this for a while, and if there was a second one floating around (hahaha) I would be surprised I hadn't heard of it.

Yes Little Traverse Bay. I will work on getting a picture up. It popped up for sale up by Cross Village and I grabbed it quick. It has been repowered with twin Yamaha 150's. I keep it on the trailer, at least this year while I explore docking options. Going to be doing some refurbishing and maybe end up getting it repainted next year.

You lucky bugger. I would have been on that one too! I am curious of your top speed with the twin 150s, I would suspect my boat is slower, but I would like to know.

I am not sure to be honest. When I took if for a test drive before purchase we ran it up to full throttle and it rocked right along. It also jumps up on plane much faster than I thought a boat of it's size would. Of course the sound of the gas being sucked out of the tank at full speed kind of takes the fun out of it somewhat, LOL. I have been working on cleaning and polishing the boat for the last week. It had a fair amount of oxidation and a heavy coat of what I assume is dried algae on the bottom. The guys at ship shape offered to do it for me but I work a lot cheaper and oh so much slower so it might be the weekend until I get her back in the water. Will try to get an estimate of speed if I can then.
