Looking at a used 2470, what to look for

Postby nerd » Mon Mar 19, 2012 9:54 pm

I've been in the market for a 22-24' walkaround, and I'm getting around to checking out a couple of Pursuits (I've seen a couple of Gradys and a Pro-Line to round out the offerings so far).

Not a huge budget here, so the boats I'm looking at are in the 95-98 MY range. Obviously, different boats (the 2460 being the Cuddy, 2470 the walkaround), and I/O power versus OB (I'm going to be storing the boat in the water, in saltwater, so I'd rather not go the I/O route).

Anything aside from the normal used boat inspection I should be doing here? Anything these models might be known for in terms of reliability/issues that I should inspect closely?

Also - given that these boats are older, I'm somewhat figuring that there might be a repower on the horizon. The OB on the one I'm looking at is a Yamaha 225 Saltwater Series 2-stroke, 1996 vintage, so I'm assuming it's just about on it's last legs. Is considering repowering this hull (provided it's in good shape) a crazy idea? Would I be able to get another 10 years of use out of it?

I would plan to get marine survey. The surveyor will check the hull for soundness and water-intrusion. I looked at some 2470s last year, they are great boats but you never know what the previous owner did to them. A survey will expose these issues. There is a surveyor in Morehead City area that used to own a 2470 and who is very knowledgeable about Pursuits. If you are in this region and want to get a survey from him I can try to find his name for you.

You are crazy for wanting to own a boat, period, but if you are planning to keep the boat for 10 years then I'd say you are less insane than someone who repowers only to sell a year later.

I just bought a 2270 two years ago. The engine and electrical system are the two most critical components of my boat. Not much else to the boat. I would make sure both of those items are in good shape. I've noticed that electrical wire will corrode all the way up the damn wire whether it has shielding on it or not! Make sure the electrical is good. Make sure it's wired correctly too.

If you think you want to re-power you need to get that boat a a good price. That will most likely be an expensive option and as far a resale and you could potentially loose a lot of money. Just my opinion. My boat is a 2000 model. I believe my hull could last through another engine so if you plan on keeping it awhile I would say a re-power would work out fine as far as the boat is concerned. I'm always thinking about my wallet though.

I like the simplicity of my two stroke, but I would really like to have a 4 stroke. I can't justify the expense though.

I have a 1997 2470 Center Console. Great boat, still get plenty of compliments on it, obviously it has been well maintained. Re-powered last year with a 250 optimax. Cost of the engine roughly $16,500, after installation total bill was just shy of $20k. Previous engine was a Merc 250 EFI, the optimax doubled my fuel economy. If you plan on keeping the boat for a while re-power is an option, just don't expect the new outboard to add much resale value.

Nerd,

I own a 2003 2470WA with twin 150 HPDI's. Boat/Motors both have about 340hrs. I test drove the same boat with a 225 Yam 4 stroke and felt it was a bit underpowered. If you are mostly in calm costal waters and you don't run full of gas and people, you will probably find it acceptable. I boat on Lake Erie which can get real nasty real quick. I love the performance of the twins on the back. Great boat for fishing and cruising. Love it! Good luck

I own a 1995 2470 WA and have been through most nooks and cranies. First off, Pursuits are great boats as this is my 3rd one. I found problems in the core in the lid over the gas tank was shot because it was not caulked properly by prior owner. Look carefully at all prior owner or service work on the hull to ensure the quality factory work was not compromised, ie. poor caulking of hull penetrations for depth sounder, etc. As said, a good marine surveyor is money well spent. good luck. I have a 1996 2470 Walk that I have owned since new. Repowered in late 2007 with a Suzuki DF300. Boat has been excellent and the 4S Suzuki made it feel like a completely different boat in a good way. In the process of completeing an electronics refresh, I plan to go another 5 years. Boat has held up extremely well. It has been used but not abused.

Own a "05" 2460 FW/cooled. Yes a lot of options to consider; I/O, O/B, Center console, walk around, year / condition of the boat, how much time & $$ to invest... I too wanted to get a CC in the same year and length. I feel your pain, I looked around for years, and finally did it. My decision came down to the right price at the right time. Didn't really want a cuddy / I/O, but now I like the bells & whistles so to speak, plenty of room to store equipment and so forth. I'm the second owner, and boat was stored in the water at least part time and sat at the dealer lot for while. The out-drive needed some sanding/paint, overall buffing and waxin' and it has bottom paint, which now I dry store at a local marina. Wish you the best of luck in your quest, lets us know how you make out.

Hi:

Do you have the name of the surveyor in Morehead City? I'm looking at a 2470 CC and want to get it checked out.

Thanks.
