fuel delivery problems

Postby rsmith2648 » Mon Sep 17, 2012 10:47 am

Took the boat out and ran out of fuel. Boat only pulled fuel from starboard tank. Could not get any fuel from port tank.

Had a factory service mechanic check out the boat and he made sure all of the fuel valves were in the proper position ( which is where they were to start with)

Visually check lines and they appear to run according to the schematics.

Had fuel topped off. Took boat out and still only pulls from the starboard tank. Also starboard engine would not run over 3500 rpms.

Any thoughts???

I cannot think why you would only be pulling from one tank. Can you shut off the fuel flowing from the starboard tank to both motors and make sure the valves to both engines are open on the port tank? What about the pickup being clogged in the port fuel tank?

I had an issue recently, which I could not figure out, and the Yamaha mechanics kept thinking it was a filter issue. I kept asking questions, until one of the mechanics mentioned that on rare occasions, the fuel line for a motor, may get pinched when you are reinstalling the cowling. That may explain why your motor is not running at proper rpm.

Something really simple, but make sure when you put the cowling back on, you route the fuel line away from the cowling gasket.... it cost me a lot for that lesson!

Try checking the fuel counter. I had a similar issue on my 2002 Yamaha 225s. The certified Yamaha tech said the fuel counters are unreliable. We took them out and the problem went away. Without the counter, you won't get fuel usage data on your gauge.

Just thought I'd weigh in here with a similar issue I had with my 2460--a previous owner/mechanic had plumbed the primary fuel filter incorrectly: there are two inlet holes (for two tanks?) and an outlet hole on the top of the Racor filter head & some genius had connected the from-tank hose to one of the "in's" and the to-engine hose to the other "in" and put the threaded stopper in the "out" hole--even though everything was clearly labeled and there's only one tank. Basically, all the fuel was flowing through the top of the fuel filter head without a drop going through the filter media. D'oh! Thank goodness for that secondary filter on the engine itself...

The take-away here is that human error can create interesting problems, so go through the entire system double-checking even the obvious.

I have a 2003 3070 Mercury 225 EFI , I can't get the port motor over 4900 rpm's , while the starboard motor will get to 5500 no problem. Also the port motor uses more gas , I have replaced all the injectors , both motors , and replaced the gas filters , including the filter screen going into the high pressure pump. Any suggestions
