Lewmar Horizon 600 Windlass

Postby s4rs » Mon Jun 20, 2016 9:52 am

Last weekend my son and I went out for a cruise and wanted to anchor off Sandy Point Reservation in Ipswich. This was the first time I was trying the windlass. We tried to put the anchor down and nothing but clicks. We had a survey done (just purchased the boat a 2003 2470wa) and the windlass was marked as functioning. After much troubleshooting I found the clutch bearing that goes in the motor was jamming on the down rotation.

I finally pulled the windlass yesterday, pulled it apart today and brought the motor to a alternator/starter rebuilder near my house. I had them pull clutch bearing, get the numbers off the bearing and so I could order a new one.

Once the rebuilder pulled the motor apart he found one of the permanent magnets had separated from the case. He is going to try an re-apoxy the magnet to save the motor.

Anyway the clutch bearing is an INA HF1616 cost is approximately $15.00 shipped and I got it from http://www.mscdirect.com. Now its wait and see if they can repair the motor. If it all goes well I just saved approximately $820.00 for a new windlass.

Lewmar Horizon 600 Windlass

One more thing about this windlass. The ultimate issue I had was with a bound drive gear. The drive gear slides into the motor through the clutch bearing. This is an assembly that consists of a shaft, 3 steel washers, a plastic washer-bearing, a longish bushing, and a short nut-bushing. The gear is left-hand threaded and move to away from the motor when you drop the anchor. This free's the shaft from the longer bushing and the shaft is allow to spin on the inside of the bushing. When you pick up the anchor the gear moves back and locks the shaft. This cause the outside diameter of the bushing to spin. This also will prevent the anchor from falling since the outside of the bushing is spinning on the inside of the bearing-clutch. In my case the gear was frozen on the shaft and never did the quarter turn outwards. I used a pair of vice grips to unscrew the bushing nut, clean the assembly, and never seize the shaft. Used the windlass this weekend and it worked perfectly.
