5000 series velvet drive trans leak
The 5000 series transmissions are notorious for having issues. Engine alignment issues likely caused the rear seal to leak (which I had on that engine when purchased).
The port transmission is more often the culprit because it is using the lay shaft in forward to reverse the shaft rotation with standard rotation engines.
Chris at hale marine said no way rebuild one without replacing the pump with a new one. I have been told by another shop that you should pull the cover with 6 bolts on the right side of the pump off every fluid change. There is a spring inside a spring in them. The inside spring breaks and this causes the pressure in the transmission to drop from 300-350 to 40-50psi. This allows the clutches to start slipping and eventually burn out. There is also a filter in here which will have plastic or metal shaving in it if thrust bearings are broken or things damaged inside the trans
As for the noises mine are making it sounds as if the stbd transmission probably doesn’t have major issues yet. The clunk when shifting in and out of gear is normal and good (this is the gears engaging and the clutches holding). The port transmission slides into gear with no noise due to the clutches slipping and very possibly a broken spring in the pump.
Now as for the solution a rebuild is around $2500/ transmission more than likely. The Hurth zf68a is a much more reliable transmission for around 2800 new with 2 year warranty. They do require new mounts but should not require the mounts pads to be moved on the stringers. The engine has to come up some and cooler lines have to be longer. Space in my boat might be an issue under the trans and not sure if there is clearance.
Lord of decisions to be made here in the coming month on what to do. Trying to document some of this for all those of us with 3000express and mercruisers with 5000 series transmissions.
Momma said there would be days like this and as they say. Bigger boat bigger problems

But then there is the bad news.
Stbd trans had a couple small things that look like metal and a some other stuff that kinda looks like clutch material
The port transmission has 3 metal chunks and other crap in it. The chunks looks like either parts of the pump or ears from the clutch plates
I guess it is decision time to decide on rebuild vs replacement of them with hurth transmissions
Guess the other good new is it is winter and now I have something to do

Found the coupling bolts to be just a little more than finger tight and the key to be walked about half way out of the coupler. I could turn the coupler on the shaft a could degrees back and forth without the shaft moving
Was not too bad of a job but did take all day. A 4x4 across the opening with one vertically supporting in the center and a 12”x1/2” eye bolt and shackle were perfect for holding up the back of the engine. All things considered came out pretty well.

Not sure yet. Gotta do some more measuring now that it is out. I want to put new zf in but have to ensure it can fit
