5000 series velvet drive trans leak

Postby Woodworker2001 » Fri Dec 31, 2021 10:30 am

Well here is my latest update:

Got an old transmission to use as a mock up. Just slide it in and put a bolt in it to hold in place.

So the easy part…. It will bolt to engine sooo much easier. Bolts are not accessible and the overall transmission just seems smaller. Filter access is very easy and plenty of room around the transmission.

The middle of road part. There is a machine shop that makes mounts to adapt the old mount to the new transmission. They are just a block that mounts to side of transmission with holes in the end of them to adapt to the old mounts and their locations. I do think those would be easy for me to make myself because I do have access to a full machine shop at the school. They are quite expensive to buy $250/mount so I am thinking i can save $1000 here on the project.

The hard part: shaft looks to me like it needs to come out and be shortened and looks like the engines are going to have to come down some. Now again I have machine shop and welding shop at my disposal. Not sure if I can get the shaft out either. Will have to go into boat garage enough to come out of strut and then out. I can cut the length off and I think key way is cut long enough in it currently but could have keyway extended too. Thinking while it is out it should goto a shop and be checked and balanced if needed. The engines will also likely need to come down although I don’t know how much. It seems pretty close on alignment right now as she sits in the boat. Don’t have much on port motor it can come down on the mounts. The stbd motor front mounts are corroded from the boats life in salt water and will likely need replaced for this project (not an easy job!). Here are some pictures are current shaft location and situation.
I can get a shorter boot for the dripless shaft packing to move the seal back 1.25” which will also help in getting things lined up. But the front engine mounts on stbd motor are no small task with engines in the boat.

So went back down today. Put the coupler on and did some cleaning. Got a good measurement. Shaft needs shortened 1.5”. I measured for shaft removal. It is gonna be damn tight. Not sure if pulling bell housing damper and flywheel should give me just enough room to clear the strut and then get the shaft out.

Figure if I do go this route that a balancing and checking for straight is also in order. I can get a shorter boot for my dripless packing so that solves that issue and I am working on 3D printing a mount adapter that I will eventually make out of aluminum that will adapt the current transmission mounts to the new transmission. But the 3D printer will allow me to test them out before making them.

Final stages of planning process I believe are complete. Going to move forward with swap. Put 3D printed mount in tonight and looked great. Just a matter of making them out of aluminum. After talking to my mechanic he thinks we can raise the back of the boat up enough with stands to get the shafts out. Called about getting them shortened and straightened if needed.

3D printed mount fit great. 12mm clearance holes in the sides and 1/2-13 tapped holes in the edges to attach to the existing transmission mounts. Should work great. See pictures below. Planning to get everything done and get alignment close and then pull the shafts.

Will probably start a new thread and detail the swap.

Haven’t been working much, but hoping to get down and do some more this weekend.

I will start a new thread soon with just the details and discussion on such swap.

Port side transmission is mounted to engine but was waiting on the aluminum adapter plates

Aluminum adapter mounts were just finished up by the machine shop and came out great!!! Can’t wait to get them in. Some more cleaning in the bildge to do and finish painting the engine mounts. Then replace the remote oil filter lines which have some chaffing on them so figure while I have access should just replace them. Then it will be time for new damper plate and new transmission on stbd side. Then I can get supports out for the engines hook stuff back up and replace stbd front engine mounts to get alignment close, pull shafts to be shortened and rock and roll from there.
