2001 Pursuit 3000 Express Ignition Switch

Postby Fishing - Fanatic » Tue Dec 08, 2020 12:49 am

I have a 2001 Pursuit 3000 Express and have issues with the start switches as well. It used to be just the starboard, however now it is both. I have to toggle them many times for it to actually start the engines. Each time, I can watch the voltmeter go down from the amp draw but nothing....10-15 times and finally cranks off.... any thoughts?

2001 Pursuit 3000 Express Ignition Switch

My first thought is how are the batteries? They can be load tested but if they are 5 years old it could be time. If you turn on the battery parallel switch on the dash does it make a difference in the starting?
How are the start switches themselves?
How about the starter solenoids?

Thanks for your reply and input. All batteries have been replaced. The battery parallel doesn't make a difference. The starter solenoids are both good. The switches themselves appear perfectly fine and activate/work perfectly, however I'm leaning towards that being the issue. I'm a bit perplexed though because the volt meter is showing amperage drop when the switches are activated, which would suggest the issue is further down the line. Like I mentioned earlier, I toggle them 5 to 10 times and eventually it kicks off just fine.

I would try replacing a switch. May be corroded from salt. Pretty easy and cheap to try replacing one. Also check resistance in you battery cables. Mine were very cooroded from salt. If you move them and they crackle they likely need replaced. Some of my grounds were pretty bad.

Have you opened the grey T.A.B.S box under the stairs? Checked the solenoids and connections in there?

If you have the TABS box under the stairs I would start there before messing with the switches on the dash. The large battery switches on the front of the TABS box can (an do) fail in such a way that they can handle small loads but not large ones. The trick to test them is to use automotive jumper cables to jump the in/out connections on the front of the box. If that solves the problem you can replace the switches. They are easily found on the internet. They are glued in place but not at all hard to remove and the come off with the front cover so you can do it at home on a bench.

Thanks for the additional info related to the TABS box. I have been troubleshooting some electrical anomalies and been in touch with Jack Wells who designed the TABS system. Hes a great guy and a wealth of knowledge. I have a hunch that has something to do with it. The switches activate fine and pull significant amperage when toggled, I think its just not getting the power down to the starter and may be interrupted at the TABS Box. Some how after many toggles, connects and starts fine. I also have a suspicion that the alternators aren't providing full charge to the batteries because I believe that charge is also interrupted at the TABS box. Input and advice welcomed....thanks to all who respond.
