5000 series velvet drive trans leak

Anyone replaced the rear main seals on the 5000 series velvet drive transmissions found in the 3000 pursuit expresses? I am hoping to do this repair while the transmissions are still in the boat due to the major work to pull them. Any advice would be great!!!

Dan, I have not on my current boat ,but yes I did on my last which were zf hurth transmissions . Ha b e to pull the yoke,slide the shift back. Then it's just a matter of pulling and replacing the seal

Check out this link Dan. #19 is the seal, The next page has the parts list. I do not envy you this job in the boat but I have an idea. Remove the exhaust tubes, loosen the top of the front engine mount nuts and remove the rear mount top nuts. Jack up the engine to gain some space. Remove the output flange and then the seal, put in the new seal and you are on your way.

Mark was thinking the same thing would make some extra room. Although if I can get the flange off the shaft and get the shaft back some more I think it can be done without raising the motor up. But also not sure if the shaft will hit the rudders before I have enough room either. Turn them hard over to gain a little more room and might be good.

Bob thanks that is what I thought. Issue will be if I can slide shaft back far enough.

Just crossing fingers I can get through the season and address it this winter but she is leaking more than I like. Hoping the flange is still good and not all pitted and rusted. But I am guessing I won’t get that lucky

Has anyone had these rebuilt? Any idea on cost to have them rebuilt if I just yank them out?

Well we made it through the season. She came out yesterday. I am in the process of deciding if I should just pull them and send them out or if I am going to just do the seals. I really don’t wanna dump 4-5k into them but I also don’t wanna do work 2 or three times. Thinking they should just be pulled and do the seal on the bench. Not much more work to pull them honestly I don’t think
