3000 pursuit water ingress

Postby keepy » Mon May 14, 2012 8:34 am

Hi Everyone
I have just imported a 3000 pursuit from Florida to Australia.
Have taken it out 6 or 7 times and very happy with it, great boat.
On the 8th time , tried to start the motor...... Strb motor would only turn over slowly, would not start.
So did a bit of research, looks like the motor has sucked some water up the exhaust..
I have taken the motor out of the boat and sent it to be repaired..
The big question is??? how do i stop this happening again,,, these mercruiser's are fitted very low in the boat...
Pursuit must have come up with a solution to fix this problem? its a common problem..
Since the purchase of this boat, i have found out this is the third set of motor's this boat has had in it.
I dont want to go through this again..
So do any of you guys have a solution.. any help would be greatly appreciated..

PS. hello from Australia..... Craig...

Wow I am sorry to hear that. I have heard of this problem and think it was poor exhaust riser design on the Mercruisers. I have been told it did not happen on 30s equipped with Crusader Marine engines. I suggest you contact Pursuit customer service through the link below. It also has a phone number. I have the same boat with the Cummins diesels, have not heard of any water ingestion problems with them either. Good luck and keep us posted.

Sorry, forgot to paste the link to the page!

Pursuit had a recall on this problem years back. Not sure of the years though. I would contact Pursuit with the HIN number

The Mercruisers were recalled for water ingestion through the risers. When I bought my 1999 Pursuit, the engines looked great and had the factory warranty work done. But after three years I had the same problem - Last year I replaced both engines with new crusaders. They are awesome - boat runs quieter and better fuel efficiency.

Besides contacting Pursuit, maybe Mercruiser could offer a solution. Maybe a different set of manifolds/risers? Or maybe a shop could fabricate a set of risers?

I have emailed Pursuit, no response as yet..
I think the only solution will be riser spacer's... no room for anything else..

You're right about the toom. When I was replacing the engines verticla room was definitely an issue. The new engines fit but it was very close.

Will have to take some measurements tomorrow.... see how much room there is between the floor and the riser's..
Dont think i will be able to fit 6 inch spacer's though..
May have to look at cutting a hole in the floor to fit them.
