First post. 2000 2470 W/A Repower

Postby ggustafson » Sat May 25, 2013 2:58 pm

Greetings from Marquette Mi on the south shore of Lake Superior. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on a repower of my 2470? I have a 2000 Yamaha 250 OX66... thinking maybe a Merc Optimax. Anyone with any experience with similar repower? Would like to get something that smokes less.....but the motor does run good...300 hours on it.

Thanks.

Gary

Welcome Gary. If I only had 300 hours I would take some time thinking about re-powering. I would think if that is the way you wanted to go you could sell or trade that engine in. It surely has value with low hours. That being said I would look into Yamaha. I used to be a Merc mechanic and did like them but 4 stroke would be how I would go now. Cleaner, and when people look to buy now it seems 4 stroke is the way they want to go. As I was getting my boat ready to launch the other day I was talking to one of the techs at the yard. He was working on a set of Verados and I asked him what engines he likes best. I asked because I am looking at a Pursuit 2670 and value his opinion. His answer was Yamaha. Whatever you choose, good luck to you. Let us know what you pick and how you like them.

Thanks a bunch for your comments and guidance. Appreciate your insight for sure and much value your experience. I will ponder this for awhile and see how I feel once I start running the boat this summer. Still in the driveway from winter storage. Hopefully soon...my boys want to get out on the water!!! Have a safe holiday weekend. Gary

Hi Gary, I have a 1999 2470 and repowered from OX66 250 with 1200 hrs to a Yamaha 300. The wife was very happy to be out or the smoke cloud, and smell. I picked up 7mph top end. My cruising RPM is about the same (4400) and picked up about 5mph. The biggest difference is the fuel consumption. The old OX was getting around 1.3mpg , and the 300 is getting 2.5 at that same cruising speed....and I don't have to feed it that expensive oil. My brother has Verado's and I know he's not doing as we'll as I am on fuel. Be safe...

I repowered my 1996 2470 with a Suzuki DF300 (from a 250 OX66) in 2007. The OX66 had 750 hours. Very happy with the conversion. You may want to test the waters on a sale of your OX66 - it may fetch a decent buck.
I think the new Yamaha 300 is an excellent motor for the 2470. No complaints at all on my Suzuki. It will fell like a completely different boat. In a good way.
