Deck guard for windlass support and deck protection

Postby MarkT » Fri Dec 21, 2018 2:55 pm

If you read my story "October Surprise" you know how the foredeck of our Pursuit 3000 had to be re-cored. One thing I noticed before work began was the spider cracks leading away from the windlass. No doubt a viscous circle as the core got softer the deck flexed more and cracked more. It did not help that the board under the skin to mount both the cleat and windlass on only supported half of each of those, the rest was through bolted through the coring material. When the deck was repaired a longer board was installed that fully supports each of those.

But I still felt the deck could use a bit more support up there, so I set about designing a template to make it happen. It is a composite design, made of a base of starboard and an aluminum top which would be powder coated once I am sure it fits correctly. The front of it is bolted to the aft end of the stainless steel frame in the bow pulpit. Both the cleat and the windlass then mount on top of it and are through bolted like the original installation, with backing plates.

Started to install this the other day. Had it powder coated first. I did not have the tools needed to open up the hole some and will finish next week.

Got it fully installed today. Made a backing plate for the cleat also and that took some time getting on. Once the 4200 sets I will trim off the excess around the windlass. Just have to get the anchor on now. Installed the mast also this morning and tomorrow I will wire up the electronics and lights mounted on it.

Deck guard for windlass support and deck protection

Hi,

Im looking into purchasing the 1999 Pursuit 3000 express with cummins as well. Survey showed saturation in the same area along with some around the small starboard hatch above the cabin. Surveyor says its something he sees on many Pursuits and that its not the end of the world if you are willing to live with it. Hulls are clean. Whats your opinion here? Anything else specifically I should look at/for? This thread is exactly what I was worried about, support for the windlass

To be clear, that support was made after the deck was repaired. If you ignore the damage it will only get worse. The coring in the bow was like oatmeal. I will PM you.
