Another 3000 Express Engine Vent Repair

Postby Woodworker2001 » Sun Jan 10, 2021 1:10 pm

So I am late to starting to work on the boat this year and that might end up hurting me but I got an engine vent out today and it was wetter than expected. In the front I am dug in about 6” and still wet up in there. Gonna leave a work lamp on it for a week or two and see how it dries out here.
Good new is starboard side (the first one I did) was worse than port so I got to breathe a little sigh of relief.
First project like this. Any advice is welcome

Another 3000 Express Engine Vent Repair

Dan I'm working on mine as well. Sounds about the same. I am going to re fill the void with structural closed cell foam. Then seal the foam with boat life . As well as install the vents with boat life and seal the inner boxes to the hull with boat life. AZ I have found out it must remain flexible over time. The factory stuff dried out and cracked over time.

Lmk bob..

How are you going to fit the foam to the shape of what you have carved out front and back? What I dug out is not all the same distance. Also how will you secure the foam to the inner and outer skin as well as the original coring?

I agree totally with the flexible part. Would be happy to chat via email or phone about the project.

I am amazed at how much difference the halogen work lamp made on drying it up. The stbd side is much dryer now than port just in 24 hours since putting the light on it. I am optimistic that it will dry out good now. I also plan on doing as many thru hull fittings as I can as well now after seeing this. I may even do the blower boxes up on the helm area.

Dan I bought a can of the foam. It is like spray foam. Gotta look up the brand for you. My email is bobbruce@optonline.net. we pulled the vents when the boat came out, then dug everything out. Kept it covered til I shrink wrapped the boat. Gonna let it dry till spring.

Any concern the boat life caulk may not have the strength to keep the vent on? I used 4200 on mine and small hidden bolts.

I would use thickened epoxy to seal the coring. You don't need to fill the entire area, but I would try to get a 2" or better border filled back in. Any of the marine caulks should hold the covers on if you run a bead all the way around. I used 5200 on mine. Don't forget to reseal the inner box while you have the covers off.

I would also get the thru hulls pulled out as soon as you can, You may find moisture around them. They are easier to destroy from the outside and just push the remains through to the inside. A pair of channel lock pliers can break the flanges off pretty easy.

You have any pictures of the hidden fasteners you used?

I think so (it was done many years ago) I will have a look for them when I'm home on the weekend
