Pursuit 3000 Express Cabin leak

Postby ropes » Tue Mar 20, 2012 11:27 pm

We have had some intense rain and winds lately(90 mph). I have had water on the cabin floor after these rains. It pools in the space under the berth then wicks into the carpet under the sink. Any idea where this may be coming from?

Pursuit 3000 Express Cabin leak

Postby MarkT » Wed Mar 21, 2012 8:14 pm

Hi Ropes. I had to pull and re-seal all the screws that held down my windshield to stop some leaks. I also noticed that the cabin top hatches leaked if water was directed at them with any force. I re-did my plexi and re-glued the gasket material in those hatches this winter. With those winds I would have no problem thinking the water came in under the gaskets of the hatches.

Pursuit 3000 Express Cabin leak

Mark I thought about the hatches but I already replaced those seals in the summer and I drilled a small hole in the plastic surround so I would know if they were leaking. So far no water coming out of holes and no wetness below the hatches. I do have a canvas cover held on by snaps all around the windows. there are small star fractures around these but the volume of water is more like a half gallon after a big storm. Not sure that amount could come in through these small cracks. this summer I think I will remove all of the snaps and inject low viscosity epoxy to try to get the cracks sealed. then I think I will tape off about a 2 inch strip all around the windshield and side windows and clean sand and then spray some sealant over the holes before putting the screw snaps back in. I used a product on my car about 5 years ago on the rocker panels that is a rock guard, It has stuck like nothing else I know of and can be applied easily and uniformly. It will just make the black trim moulding look thicker. It is a rough surface that is tough and remains flexible. As for the window I will check and reseal. Where does the water travel? It must travel along the headliner and then down the side walls until it reaches the floor.I noticed the window was sealed with silicone previously but I think I would rather use sikaflex. Much better seal!! I may start my new kicker mounting project this weekend. Last project was done between storms so was done quickly and no pics!!! I will be better at capturing next project to share. thanks Chris.

If it was a leak in the windshield you are right, it would travel in the headliner. You may be able to see tell tale tracks of water down the side of the cabin just below the headliner if you look at it just right. Mine has some rot in the luan under the headliner that has allowed the vinyl to curl up a bit at the edge. I have noticed this on many 30s listed online with pictures. I wonder if it is possible that the water comes in around a thru hull fitting that could be at or just above the waterline? I also had a cracked fitting for the a/c overboard drain that allowed water to come in under the table and wick into the rug. Keep us posted please!
