Buying Pursuit 2550 need feedback please!

Postby Laz » Sat Aug 11, 2012 4:59 pm

Hello I am about to purchase a 87' Pursuit 2550 (I think that is the model) center console with the small flat top cuddy and twin 200 Yamaha's. The boat needs some TLC. I know the owner and the boat since new. Ever since I rode on it for the first time (1990) I loved this boat.

My question is: What details I need to check that are known in this type of boat?

One more thing the transom has some gelcoat cracks on the curves. Should I worry about this? How difficult it is to fix?

Thanks

You may want to have the engines checked out, compression tests etc. When was the last service with lower unit oil changes, water pump and spark plugs and filters? gel coat cracks are usually cosmetic, but larger ones may let water into the coring materials if they are used. I repair those cracks by grinding out with a dremmel tool and filling with either Marine-Tex or West Systems Six10 epoxy with some tint in it. I then wet sand with 600 grit paper. Not always perfect but better than looking at the cracks. Enjoy the boat and good luck!

I just bought an '88 2550 with twin 150's. In addition to the suggestions above, you might have someone check the fuel and oil lines and pull the hatches to check the bilge. Mine also has cracks in the gell coat at the curve on the transom. If the transom is still rigid and nothing visibly flexes when put under stress then closing them up should be fine. Mine had some pretty severe oxidation and needed a fair amount of cleaning and waxing. I hope to either paint it or have the gell coat redone over the next couple of years. It is one sweet riding boat however and gets a fair amount of positive comments at the dock. Good Luck with your purchase.
