OS235 Pursuit Cuddy 2007 - Battery power question

Postby SparkyMark » Fri Jan 18, 2013 3:20 pm

Hello Everyone!. In 2010, I became a proud owener of a demo craft with 4 hrs of op. I now have around 400 hrs in 3 seasons. I truly enjoy the ride and confidence it exudes. Has a 250 Yamaha and have had no major issues with the engine or boat. Only minor things mostly related to aftermarket installs for things like battery charger and shorepower connections. On the subject of chargers, I recently had shore power charger installed. By the time of haul out this fall, both batteries went out and I was told they need to be replaced in the Spring. All the while, the wiring has been subject of confusion and debate with my boatyard. They claim as wired, that the only way to keep both batteries fully charged is to have House and Engine line batteries open to parallel at all times running. And, that at the dock, shore power will charge the engine battery. I've heard from other boaters that the parallel should not be open (except in an emergency) while running. As the batteries may need to be replaced in the Spring, I'd like to get some opinions on this and any help would be of great assistance. Also aside from normal Spring/Fall maintenance, is there anything else I should be thinking about as the boat and engine itself approaches 6 years old. Otherwise a GREAT machine to ride on Nantucket Sound!!

Glad you found us, welcome!

There are lots of ways to wire up a charger. Not knowing exactly how it was wired makes it difficult to comment. The actual person that wired it would be the best one to talk to.

As I need to replace the batteries, I will make sure that I get the answers I need. And I guess I can dictate from there the wiring setup that makes most sense to me. Thanks!

Depends on if your charger has a single bank or multiple banks. If it has multiple banks, each battery should be hooked up to the charger separately. If it is a single bank, your boatyard is probably right. You really should have a multiple bank, multiple step charger.

Thanks Blue Runner! I did some research and I currently have a PROSPORT 8 Battery Charger PNR 42008 but it doesn't say 2Bank. I did see that PROMARINAR has a second generation of the 42008 that does feature 2Bank. There are also several other multiple bank brands with add'l features to choose from in the same price range like "Shumacher". I consider myself much more informed going into my discussions with my boatyard. Thanks Again!
