Let's See your Engine Rooms...

Postby Trpntj » Mon Apr 08, 2013 11:26 pm

So I picked up my Offshore back at the end of summer, I have been going through it, tracing things out, figuring out the in and outs of the new (96) boat, so I know how it all comes together. In the bit I have done so far, it is clear that the engine room needs some serious cleaning up! I have been going through and looking at other engine rooms that I can find pics of and mine is somewhere on the more cluttered side.

This is my engine room...

LOOK AT ALL THOSE WIRES...The Fire extinguisher spray head is actually covered, guess surveyor didn't think that was a big deal...

Found this clean looking engine room on boats.com, Yanmar repower

So I am just trying to get some ideas on how I can clean mine up. Mine has a lot of added wiring, genset, and tower which adds to the mess, but I think the current state of mine is in need of some fixing.

Anyone have any detailed pics of theirs? I was curious of how others look on the outboard sides of the motors. I have dual batteries on each side, plus the waste tank on the port side. Aft bulkhead has my Racors, where I see a lot of factor racors on the stringers.

So let's see them if you don't mind. Oh yeah and other inboards are welcome to contribute, looking for cable managment ideas...

I am post these for MarkT, as he sent them to me as he has trouble posting pics on the forum...

" I have a 1999 Pursuit 3000 express with Cummins 4BTA-250. If you think your engine room is tight try one of these on for size! Anyway I have done a lot of work to make mine more roomy and better including removing a battery so now I have only two one on each side at the rear bulkhead. I made a jumper wire in the battery selector so that the port engine (deep cycle battery) is also the house battery and have had no problem at all. I put on S&B air filters. I had to replace my shaft logs and went full fiberglass instead of the bronze ones. I also put in drive savers between the couplings. Tons of other stuff all aimed at giving me room to move in there."

I have to say he has done some very nice work and it is tidy, great work! I have some questions, what is that on the outboard side of your port motor? Is that a vacuflush system? And the round, white cylindrical thing forward of that? Also on your waterlines, is the light green raw water? On your dripless shaft seals, where does the second line goto? I have a different brand...

Thanks for posting those. I should have told you the third battery was between the engines making it very hard to get anything done in there. On the port side outboard of the engine is the vacu-flush and forward of that the water heater. The green water line is raw water supply to the bait tank. If I have to replace the water heater I would go with a flat style mounted against the hull as far out as possible. On the shaft seals each engine supplies water to the seal but there is also a jumper line connecting them so if there is a supply problem to one it would still get water from the other side. It is a good idea to test the supply each season.
