1988 2000 Cuddy repower and transom bracket

Postby Mcdo2137 » Sat Jul 06, 2019 8:50 pm

Hi everyone, I recently purchased this 20' cuddy for a bargain (or so I thought) only to figure out the transom was wet and rotted! I purchased the boat from a friend who had purchased boat and trailer no motor. He only wanted the trailer. I left the boat with him to swap trailers and 6 months later I was ready to repower it with a BF225 outboard. Picked it up and he had left the drain plug in all that time.....

So now I am going to rebuild the transom, closing the cutout for the outboard and build a 24 inch bracket on the back for the BF 225 Honda.

Here are a few pictures of the progress of the project. I now have all the wood out and most of the grinding done.

1988 2000 Cuddy repower and transom bracket

Postby Mcdo2137 » Mon Jul 15, 2019 9:40 pm

Here are a few more progress pictures. Almost all cleaned up. About ready to start going back together. I found a bracket on Ebay so I won't be glassing one up.

1988 2000 Cuddy repower and transom bracket

Hello, You look like you are doing a great job.
I recently had the transom replaced on my 2550 CC 1987 and the transom layout and stringers look the same as yours. After i repowered with twin 225 optimax's, I noticed that the transom was flexing. The fiberglass cap over the top shell to the bottom around the top of the transom cracked after hitting a couple of big waves.
The guy that replaced the transom did it from the outside of the boat. Kind of like this post. https://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-bo ... grade.html

I was planning on adding some knee braces to the inside at the motor location and the stringers.

Looking forward to seeing your progress!

1988 2000 Cuddy repower and transom bracket

Postby Mcdo2137 » Wed Sep 04, 2019 10:37 pm

Progress has been slow but I am moving along a little more now. I have the transom glassed in, outside of the transom is completed minus fairing and paint. This project is way more involved than I would have imagined lol. I am 8 gallons of epoxy into the transom rebuild . So far on the inside of the transom I only have 2 layers of Tabbing and 2 layers of 1800 biax layed up. I imagine I will need another 4-5 gallons of epoxy to finish the job.
