1998 Pursuit 22 Kodiak W/ 200hp Yamaha

Hi, I am setting up an appointment to look at the above boat. Originally the boat was listed as sale pending but the buyer backed out because the boat has a hairline crack in the transom. Does anyone own a Pursuit Kodiak who could tell me if this is a common problem. Also can you advise me of any plusses or minusses about the boat, or any problems that I should focus upon.

Karen I do not have any experience other than a delivery with the Kodiak. But I would make sure that a surveyor looks at the transom to make sure there has been no water intrusion into the coring material of the transom. He can check for moisture levels and let you know if there is any rot in there. If there is none yet it is a fairly easy fix with some epoxy. That is not something you want to ignore as over time it can lead to damage.

I have a 2000 Kodiak an I do not have any problems with the transom that I know of. Do you have a photo to share of the crack? Make sure you get someone reputable to look at that.

I, we, love the boat. It's near perfect except for water sports. You can pull a tube with it but the rope will drag in the water which makes it hard to swing the tube around.

The only design flaw I have seen is I have to turn the batteries sideways to get them in to the hatch. Make sure the wiring on the boat isn't screwed up and corroded.

I have a Yamaha OX66 two stroke. If you get that engine make sure you visit "thehulltruth.com." Lots of info there. That engine has some fuel related issues, but nothing you can't work with. Basically you have to change your filters, low pressure fuel pumps, and do some other things regularly. Ethanol is typically the problem. But again, just keep you fuel system clean and you'll be fine.

So...I would really make sure to check out the engine and electrical system. There isn't much else to that boat. I'm so glad I bought mine. Going out tomorrow as a matter of fact!!

A survey is worth the money in this situation as mentioned above. The big concern is water intrusion in the transom and while they are at it they can look at the rest of the hull and the systems. It might cost you $350 or so for the survery, cheap insurance.

I really like the 2270. We looked at two of them but decided to go with the 2460 with a Mercruiser Bravo III. I was going to go with the Kodiak if we went with the trailer option but we decided to keep ours inside rack stored so the extra 2 feet was not an issue.

During my investigation I spoke to the local Yamaha dealer about the OX66 engines. The one I was looking at had about 700 hours. He said they are great, reliable engines that can last for thousands of hours if the fuel system is maintained. (Like ironsinker said) They do have a reputation for burning lots of gas but for what it costs to repower with a four stroke you can buy lots of gas.

Good luck
