Exhaust Elbow

Postby MarkT » Mon Jul 09, 2018 9:57 pm

This spring I had test run my engines on land like I always do and noticed a broken bolt on the starboard turbo/elbow connection. I had to invent a tool that would let me drill out the bolt in the center for an easy out. I used a drill guide from a dowling jig to center the bit, and luckily it worked out great. Then I noticed the elbow mounting flange was bent from the rust expansion from the turbo after almost 20 years of condensation. I sent it out to Greenwater Marine Exhaust in Texas, and then he sent it to Performance Coatings in Auburn Washington to be ceramic coated. I will be installing this tomorrow, exactly 5 years and 6 days after the port elbow was redone the same way by the same companies. In total with shipping and new bolts and gaskets it cost about $1200, I believe a new one is close to $3k. Last time I tried new ones were back ordered.

I forgot, this is the drill guide screwed to a piece of timber tech decking, bolted to the turbo.

Back out on the water! I put it all together yesterday, and took a short run. Took her out this evening and anchored for dinner. It's all good! Halfway through summer, but now that my wife and I are retired we can run much later into the fall. getting used to the FLIR also.
