1998 2870 WA fuel tan replacement

Postby JCounihan » Wed Feb 26, 2020 8:55 am

Hello,

I am looking for any information on replacing the fuel tanks in my boat one is leaking badly. I just bough this boat it had been sitting for a couple of years, it only has approx 350 hours on the 200 hp Yamaha's. Where do i get new tanks? how do i remove the old ones and what should it cost? Is it worth doing?

James, don't despair. Not sure where you are located but there are plenty of places that will fabricate new fuel tanks. I am not sure of your deck configuration, pictures would help. But you probably have a deck panel that is screwed down, it is over the tanks.I am not sure if there is anything mounted on that deck. Is it worth doing? Only if you like the boat. Personally, I think it is. Fix it before you blow up!

Hi James, I just finished this project on my 2870. I have attached some pictures , like Mark said you can find plenty of shops to make your tanks. I had mine made in N.J. Let me know if you have any questions.

1998 2870 WA fuel tan replacement

Postby Capt.G » Thu Dec 03, 2020 8:54 pm

Big help guys. I appreciate all the sharing of info. I am in the process of replacing tanks myself. I want to make sure this job lasts longer than the factory job. I am not sure whether to use epoxy paint on the new aluminum tanks, which seems to fail in 15 years, or zinc chromate....maybe moeller zinc phosphate primer? Any advice on a good product that I missed?

Thanks in advance
