power assist steering?

Postby Fanukalum » Sat May 09, 2020 1:41 pm

I have a 2018 Pursuit 325OS with power assist steering and a Garmin autopilot. On the dash there is a togle switch to turn the power steering pump off/on. Can someone tell me the purpose of have a switch for the power steering?
When would it be advantageous to turn it off? If they went to the trouble of placing a switch on the dash, there must be a reason.

power assist steering?

Okay, here is what I know. The switch simply turns the power assist pump on/off. No advantage to have it off in my opinion, steering will be very hard in the off position. One of the boats that I run , a 38 Donzi was powered with triple Verado 275s. The power assist on that boat consisted of a pump, 3 sensor harneses, one for each motor, and a control module, which powered the pump. What a nightmare, constant problems. Your system, with an on/off switch is , in my opinion, the way to go. Keep it simple. Okay! Here is where things get even more complicated. The same Donzi has just been repowered with new Triple 300 Suzukis. A new power assist system was installed, new pump, lines and rams for an xtra 3k. Twenty hours on the new system, and 2 pumps have failed. Boat is at the Zuk dealers yard , trying to find out why we are on our 3rd pump. My motto, Keep it simple as possible. The more wires, the more problems.
