Leak around engine room air intake

Postby ropes » Tue Feb 14, 2012 3:41 pm

My 3000 Express had several leaks inside that were easy fixes but there was still water coming in during heavy rains. I noticed water dripping down the inside of the hull from around the air intake vent. I removed the vent to find the caulking was failing and also the layer between the fiberglass layers was all wet and punky. I have removed as much of the soft material as I could. It is a wodd fiber then there is a thinner layer of green foam a bit lower. Where will the water go? I think the middle layer further down in the hull is a different composition that seems more resistant to water damage. What is the best way to repair this area?

Leak around engine room air intake

Chris, my first question is how do you fit in some of these places?. I know my boat is tight as can be. I have re-sealed my vents but since you have yours out I would remove the soft material and fill the void with West System Six10 epoxy. It is fantastic stuff. It comes in a tube for a caulking gun and is mixed in the nozzle. I have used it before when I took out my shaft logs and installed fiberglass logs.. Shoot it in, smooth the edges so the vent fits back in and let it dry. Check it out online.

Leak around engine room air intake

With some difficulty and soreness after. Advil!!! I know there are some really tight spots. So what is the best way to dry out the area? Should I drill holes on the inside or just let it sit open for a while?
