Water flowing up through cockpit drains

Postby rencoho » Wed Jun 13, 2012 2:07 pm

I recently purchased a new OS255 Pursuit, I have one issue with it so far. Water gushes up the port side cockpit drain near the stern, getting everyones feet quite wet in the process, when drift fishing in 2 to 3 ft seas. I checked the rubber flap on the drain hole on the outside and it appears to function properly. Any ideas??

Water flowing up through cockpit drains

My thought is it is just a poor design. The deck height is close to water level and when you are fishing the stern is even lower since the people are back fishing there. You need a deck drain with a snorkel ball in it, when the water comes up the ball floats and closes the drain. I don't know if they are made though. I saw them long ago on USCG Lifeboats.

Water flowing up through cockpit drains

My boat will do the same thing if too many people are standing on one side of the boat. It will take about 3 heavy people standing in one back corner of the boat to do it though and really isn't a problem for the most part. It's only happened once in almost 3 years of ownership for me. However, they will do it I guess depending on how you are stacked up on the boat.

If you have weight spread evenly and it still happens then you may want to have someone look at it. I don't expect that to be normal.

Water flowing up through cockpit drains

I have had the very same problem for years. Water pools and flows in and out with the ebb and flow through my starboard cockpit drain. My above-water through hull does not have an external flap though. It's only a problem when I have a lot of weight on the back of the boat such as a large cooler plus full gear along with full tanks.

Has anyone seen or heard of a standard fix for this???

My 2470 center console does it as well and my flapper is still present. Not sure of fix. No big deal here in Florida.

You are talking about scupper holes right? I know the on the boat I just bought, it fills the liner a little when you back it down the ramp at the boat launch too. I have a set of hard rubber plugs that we stick in there to keep water out. If you do take a wave over the pulpit, then just pull the plugs and drain the water.
