throttle cable length\adjustment

Postby aerovest1 » Fri Aug 03, 2012 3:53 pm

Purchased a new 200c late last fall and I have been experiencing over an 8" throw on the throttle from reverse at idle to anything over 650 rpm.

The dealer says it is adjusted properly but my discussions with Yamaha lead me to suspect that the cable installed at the factory is too long as this is Pursuit's smallest boat.

Has anyone experienced what seems to be an abnormally long throttle throw? Thanks

Long cables have nothing to do with the "throw". If you get proper wide open throttle RPM and adequate reverse RPM then you're fine. Do you have Yamaha controls or Morse? A long throw enables you to engage the clutch dog properly...hearing a hard clunk is good...grinding/clicking gears is bad.

Alan- Thanks for getting back to me - have Yamaha controls- the throttle range to develop any rpms above an idle brings the lever nearly down to my knees, almost have to bend over to control the boat docking in a good tidal current- it seems awfully long compared to what I have experienced over the years-any way to shorten the distance the lever travels-Doug

Hey Doug...I forgot, do you have a binacle mount or is it on the sidewall? The handles come off and can be "reoriented" on the spline...I've done that before to make controls more ergonomic.

Alan- the throttle is on my center console which is binnacle mounted- what are you suggesting with re-orienting them? the throttle lever is a straight arm that moves approximately 150 degrees- Doug

Doug...sorry forgot to check the forum. I cannot imagine a problem as you describe on a new rig. Send me some pics...disengage the shift ( push the button on the lever in) and then take a pic of WOT in forward and show max reverse. I may not have any ideas as I have never had a complaint like that in 20yrs of outboard sales/repairs.
