Hello all
Just got a 38 off shore....3 yamaha s ...super boat!!
Coming from big diesels...man..I look terrible around the docks!!
She does not like to back up!! Have been killing middle engine, seems to help.
Give me some advice?

I have never driven a boat that size with out boards its sounds like it would be different..... A few more trips and you'll be great

I went from a Tiara 38 to a Pursuit 315OS. I too, looked terrible around the dock, but I am getting better. I have had a hard time learning that I have to steer the outboards when backing, I can't just use the gears and throttles like I did with the diesels. Bow thruster helps a lot.

Well, the easy fix, which I'm sure you already realize is to slow down. Nothing wrong with inching in.
The props on your diesels were much deeper in the water, have a MUCH better bite (in reverse - due to their shape and being deeper in the water) with lots of low rpm torque available to turn em.
Outboard props are pretty much designed to push you fast in forward. This boat won't ever back like your old one would but with a little practice I'm sure you will do well. And as you already know there are many other reasons these are "better" boats to own.

The most key factor with docking any boat is to go slow, it makes changes in direction much easier and if you hit something it won't hurt ( your pride or boat ). Docking with out boards is a lot different & a bit more challenging. Does your boat have a bow thruster if not I would suggest one on a boat that size & shutting down center motor make sense, good luck. :confused:

Yamaha Helm Master will help. Wish I had this setup.

Use your outboards to slow your turns. One in forward the other in reverse. Works well for a controlled reverse as well.
Congrats on the new boat. Sounds awesome.
