Battery Switches

Postby mikeh2026 » Thu May 14, 2015 7:18 am

Hello all,

I am a newbie to this forum posting stuff, so please forgive my blunders.

I have a 2001 3070 Offshore . Just installed 3 new batteries, and only getting 9 volts through the port battery switch. The other 2 are functioning as expected. I havent yet had time to pop the cover, if I even can, so my question is, is there anything under the cover that can be cleaned/repaired or replaced without replacing the entire switch panel?

Thanks for any help I can get on this...

If it has the TABS (Total Automatic Battery System) grey box in the aft bilge my suggestion is to call Jack Wells of Wells Marine. He is the one that invented the TABS panel and can usually talk you through any issues that you may be having. It could simply be a bad battery switch as I was having a similar problem with my 2001 3070 Offshore and ended up buying and installing three new switches which was an easy replacement. I also sent the unit off to Jack to fix an internal diode that involved the charging system. He is a good guy to talk to and below are his links (hope this helps). The panel is not very intimidating as the front comes off by removing the four screws and unplugging a couple of wires.

Just curious if you figured out what the problem was?

Jack Wells is the man. I shipped him the unit, he received it on Wed and shipped it back to me by Sat. He rebuilt the unit upgrading to the new version replacing all 3 batt switches and did it right!! $225. He is the original designer and builder, so the recommendation was spot on... thanks so much for the help

TABS unit , I have a 2003 3070 , I sent jack my TABS unit to be rebuilt , he said it was to far gone , but he had a rebuilt one in stock . He sent it out right away , which was great . I have developed other problems , noise thru my radio a/m-f/m and VHF , one motor shuts off under way , and if I just switch off the battery switch and turn it back on the motor starts right up and it won't happen for several trips afterward . Any thoughts what to look for .

Just a suggestion but it sounds like the battery switches on the TABS unit may be going bad? Also, I would email or call Jack and explain the problems that you are having and he may be able to point you in the right direction as well.

Battery Switches

Postby tjb600 » Sun May 29, 2016 4:06 pm

This is bizarre, but I had a battery that had reverse polarity and only made 9V. It was after I accidentally completely discharged it and tried to recharge it. Not to say same thing here, but maybe put a different battery in, just to see.
