385 OS Bow Thruster

Postby seeshell » Mon Jul 27, 2015 8:02 pm

My bow thruster stopped working yesterday. I can still hear the motor running but there is no thrust. I am thinking either the prop is bad or the drive pin is sheared. It has a Lewmar TT185 thruster. Does anyone know how to access the drive pin? On the schematic, it appears to be inside the boat and accessed by removing the motor. I am at a remote location in Alaska so I am trying to troubleshoot as much as possible without hauling the boat out.

My bow thruster stopped working recently, it only clicked when on. I had to clean the terminals to the battery as they were corroded enough to not supply sufficient juice. This worked for me.

I have a 385 OS that probably blew the bow thruster fuse. Does anyone know the type? I’d like to get one prior to heading to boat.

There is a 5 Amp automotive fuse on the control wiring at bow thruster motor. It is located under the white cover. This was my culprit.

You have to pull up the floor panel under the table in the V-berth. Remove five Phillips head screws in the floor panel and remove it. You see the bow thruster motor underneath. To get to the shear pin you’ll need to pull the motor off the top of the saddle that sits on top of the bow thruster tube. To do that, just disconnect the battery cables from the bow thruster and remove the four bolts that attach the bow thruster to the saddle. Just lift it straight up and out. You’ll see the shear pin, or what’s left of it since yours in almost certainly broken, in the end of the drive shaft on the bottom of the motor.

I should also add that you can do all this without hauling out the boat. It’s all water tight as long as you don’t remove the saddle from the tube.

I have another problem with my Lewmar bow thruster. It blows the breaker in the DC panel at the cockpit. The boat had 150 hours on engines, so I can’t imagine it’s wear. I have opened and sprayed the motor brushes area with solvent. If I manually rotate the motor it will work again a few times, then trip breaker again. Can my motor be bad already?

The above problem was solved with a replacement battery.
