1999 Pursuit 2870 WA -need feedback pls.

Postby Corisco » Tue Sep 29, 2015 9:02 am

Hey Guys,
Excited to join this forum. I’m entertaining buying a 1999 Pursuit 2870 WA with a hard top, powered by twin 225 HP Yamaha OX66 with 700 hours(running strong) Boat looks very clean and well-kept except the 2 seat cushions which have taken a beating from the sun. All the electronics are original B&W. Owner wants 35k for it which seems high to me...I’d like to get a little advise from you experts:
What would be a fair price tag for both the seller and me the buyer?
Secondly, I want to keep it on a trailer for short trips to the ramp (4 miles round trip) and the occasional longer hauls for servicing.
Is a 10,500 lbs trailer suitable for this boat or do I need a 15000lbs rated trailer? Lastly, what is the total height of this boat on the trailer?
Sorry for my lengthy first post.
Thanks in advance.

I agree that that 35k is high, especially with older power and electronics. At 700 hrs, those ox66's are barely broken in but you will likely need to update all electronics.

I have the same boat but mine is 3 years older with JohnRude 2 strokes. I would expect to pay no more than 20-30k for that boat today. It is a buyers market now and if you like the 2870 then look at the Grady and BW's in the same layout and price range too. I'd low-ball them at 20k and haggle a bit then get the trailer thrown in at the last bid, if it's available.

And speaking of trailers...if they are giving you a free 10.5k trailer with the boat, take it. If you are buying one, then shoot for 15k or more if new or if you find a steal on a 12.5k used trailer, you will probably be able to get away with it for moderate use. Never buy a beater trailer unless you are going to rebuild it yourself as it will cost you more in parts and labor than it does to buy a new one.

The 2870 w/a will be between 9200-9500lbs wet (depending on power) and more if you fill it full of gear/boat stuff. The ratings online for 5500 lbs are dead wrong. You will need at least D rated tires too. Now for the scenario that you described: You should be fine for a 4 mile round trip tows if you keep good tires on it. It's the long tows at highway speeds when you encounter road imperfections when you are glad to have a stout trailer under your craft. Emergency situations and liability is another matter entirely.

Good luck with your search and thank for posting!!!

Thanks for all this great feedback and advice, I figure if I get the price down to the mid to upper 20’s even it’s a fair buy, this boat has been used as a family type of boat so its not beat up to heck.

We’re testing compression on the motors and doing a videoscope of each cylinder as well. What pressure should I look for across all cylinders and what is a safe threshold pressure difference for detecting a weak piston?

Thanks
