Hole in hull of a 3000

Postby CaboJohn » Sun Mar 29, 2020 3:28 pm

I have a 2002 Pursuit 3000 Express with a strange hole in the bow. I am not sure when whatever used to be in the hole was knocked out or fell out, but I just noticed it. I did not know whatever was in there existed, so I have never used it. If the picture comes though with this posting perhaps someone will recognize the shape. To me it looks like a hole for a docking light, but maybe not as it seems to be facing down (not ahead), is only on one side of the bow, and was held in with two screws whereas docking lights usually have at least 6 screws. Screws are about 5 inches apart. I presume the factory looking wire hanging out went to it, but I don't know that for sure. The hull that was covered is the original yellow color (not the faded to cream color it is now), so I assume whatever it was went on at the factory or shortly after manufacture.

Any answers (or guesses) will be appreciated.

Possibly a horn. My 99 has the horn on the starboard side outside of the helm seat.

That is the horn. Did it fall out? Was it there when you got the boat? The older 30s like mine have the horn on the upper side by the helm.

Hole in hull of a 3000

Thank you for the responses. I have had the boat for 8 years and never knew that thing was there. The boat has a horn and search light mounted on top. But the horn makes sense and the "horn covers" I see for sale on the internet match the shape and the two screw attachment. I am not sure how the horn itself was held in (or if perhaps it is in the bottom of the boat?)

In any case I don't need it.

Questions:
Can anyone send me a picture of what the horn cover looks like on a Pursuit? It would me nice to match it if possible. I also would very much appreciate the dimensions, although that is asking a lot. I am back in Florida and locked down in my home here. The boat was left in Los Cabos Mexico and I am not sure when I will get back. Possibly not until fall. I would be nice to return with a workable cover to install. My plan (right now) is to back it with heavy rubber sheeting to plug the slots in the replacement cover and prevent leakage into the hull.

Thank you again for your help.

CJ, I would not fool around with that. If you are not going to put a horn in there I suggest you take some epoxy and seal the edges of the cutout. If water gets into the core you've got a problem. Why not take a piece of 1/8" aluminum and make a temp cover using the original screw holes and some 4200 to seal it off. 5200 if you are going to leave it. Best plan is to seal it up with glass and gelcoat it to match best you can. I did try to find a picture of it in a Pursuit online yesterday but had no luck.

The best solution seems to be to simply replace the missing horn and grill. FIAMM makes one that looks like it fits, or at least close enough that I can make it fit. Amazingly the horn and SS grill are only $31.96 on Amazon. And who knows, maybe the thing will actually work. I figure many hundreds to have the local glass guy do a patch so I will try this first. (I will seal the edges of the cut hole first, however. I have already gone though the side vent for the engine room issue and know what to do).

Thanks for the help and advice!
