Checking Fuel Sender

Postby GoinSouth » Sun Jul 24, 2011 9:03 am

Brought my new to me bought to my dock after filling 150 gal fuel tank. Ran about 12 hours on the intercoastal many of them in IC no wake zones. Fuel gauge said 1/8th tank left. Gulp. Thats a lot of fuel! Went to fill up and could only get 60 gallons in the tank. Back to half happy because that seems more normal. General concensus is a bad fuel sender. I notice that the tank has a manual read gauge on the top of the sender but not sure if that is reading is just a duplicate of that sent to the gauge and wrong as well. Obviously I will check it as we use the fuel. I want to check the ohn reading on the sender but haven't a clue how to do so. Anyone know of some step by step directions on doing this? I am replacing the gauge this coming week and there is the chance that it is simply the old gauge but conventional wisdom seems to be that it most likely isn't the issue. Any help or comments appreciated!

Checking Fuel Sender

GoinSouth,

I don't have your step by step answer but I can tell you that my brother and I, who also own Pursuits have the same issue. I actually trust my manual gauge at the tank more than the electronic. I've installed a clear hatch and a flash light in the center console just this issue. At 27 knots my electronic gauge will begin blinking at one bar but when down to idle speed it'll go up to two or sometimes threee bars and the manual gauge will read between about 1/4-1/3 a tank. Monitoring fueling up also confirms the manual is on and to use the electronic more as secondary in fuel monitoring. It'll be interesting to hear others accounts with the electronic gauge vs. the manual at the tank.

A lot of words for no help!

Checking Fuel Sender

I have a 2001 2470 with the manual tank guage reading less than the gauge on center consol. Have removed the float/mechanical gauge unit at tank. Making a new gasket, cleaning all contacts and will "stick" the tank in the next few days to verify the fuel amount and amount shown on each guage. Float unit looks in great shape and is a "direct drive" to the pointer on the mechanical guage. Suspect cleaning electrical gauge contacts will solve the problem.

I'll let you know what I find.

Yup, my console says blinky blinky all the time. I've replaced the wires and attempted to make a more secure ground connection (what I suspected from early on.) I've had three mechanics take a look at it and #3 will take another swing at it tomorrow. I'm pretty much clueless but I am hoping it is the sender and not the Yamaha gauge.
