Gimble mount and downrigger recommendations

Postby anderdog » Sun Apr 08, 2012 5:08 am

I'm installing a pair of Cannon Mag20 downriggers on my 2460 Denali and considering using a "gimble mount" that the manufacturer makes which inserts into the flush mount rod holders.

I'm concerned about the stress / moment that this will create on the gunwales.

Has anyone seen or used such a mounting system for their downriggers? Any recommendations are welcome.

Cheers,

anderdog

Gimble mount and downrigger recommendations

I would be a little concerned about stress cracks popping up from that. But as long as they release you should be ok. You could make backing plates for the rod holders to distribute the load from underneath.

Gimble mount and downrigger recommendations

Thanks Mark!

Based on other sites I've researched some say don't do it and others say no problem. Both say however to add backing to the rod holders.

I'll keep doing some research and let me know if you hear of anything.

Cheers,

Gimble mount and downrigger recommendations

I have used gimble mounts on my 2470 CC as well as my current 3000 offshore. I fish a fair amount usually 3 days a week. I prefer gimble mounts due to the fact our boat is a family boat as well. I have had no issues with stress cracks or effecting the boat. The only issue I have ever seen was on a freinds 29 Coronet the rod holder itself eventually loosened, but no biggie.
